The College of DuPage men’s soccer team made their first home appearance of the season Aug. 27. COD scored early in the first half against Governors State JV, but couldn’t keep the lead through the second. The Chaparrals outshot the Jaguars 22-10, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie, leaving them with a 0-1-1 record.*
“We did a great job of bringing all of the things together that we’ve been working on all preseason and, so far, the beginning of the season,” head men’s soccer coach Zac Ludwig said. “[They were] being consistent throughout the whole game, working hard and really executing. Ultimately, I thought we did a great job of creating scoring chances. Fortunately one went in, but we really forced the other team to have to come up big to deny us our chances.”
Freshman forward Archie Murphy scored the first goal of the game with 35:19 left in the first half of the game; sophomore back Joe Muana collected the assist. Murphy also made 10 shots and five shots on goal.
“It’s nice to see,” Murphy said. “I scored in scrimmages, but it’s not really the same as getting your first one in an actual league campaign. It was a nice weight off of my shoulders to open the account early on. But I was a bit disappointed, I felt like I could’ve had two or three more; there’s room for improvement.”
Freshman utility Jacob Sarabia received a yellow card at the 71-minute mark. The Chaps received three total yellow cards to the Jaguars’ one, and Sarabia attributed it to the game being notably physical.
“I always think the game is physical,” Sarabia said. “The [referee] gave out a lot of yellows, but it’s a physical game. I’m more of a technical guy, I find everything open and I’m just a little bit aggressive on the ball. When I see an open space, I’m just more aggressive on someone, I’m more physical too.”
Freshman goalkeeper Sam Negus made three saves and allowed one goal on four shots on goal.
“I think we were the better team,” Negus said. “We had loads more chances that we didn’t put away and that came back to bite us. [It was] a good game, I enjoyed it.”
*The Chaparrals tied on the road against the Bryant & Stratton College Bobcats 1-1 with the tying goal coming from freshman forward Archie Murphy assisted by freshman utility Jacob Sarabia. Murphy also scored a hat trick in a 3-1 road victory against the Waubonsee Community College Chiefs. With their first win of the season, the Chaps raised their record to 1-1-2 and they battle the South Suburban College Bulldogs at 3 p.m. on Sept. 6 in South Holland, IL.
