The College of DuPage softball team entered April 25 after two straight losses in a doubleheader against Milwaukee Area Technical College on April 23 in Milwaukee, as the team looked to bounce back against the Chargers.
To start off game one, DuPage scored two runs in the first with Carl Sandburg responding with one in the third and two in the fifth, taking a 3-2 lead.
However, the momentum shifted in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Ava Forsberg hit a grand slam to take a 6-3 lead. DuPage added four more runs the next inning to extend the advantage to 10-3. DuPage looked to close the game going to seventh but the Chargers didn’t go down without a fight as they scored four runs. Despite giving up four runs, Angelina Tuminello stopped the bleeding and ended the game with a Chaparrals win 10-7.
Game two followed shortly after with the Chaps opening the floodgates scoring fives in the first. Despite the early number of runs, both teams went scoreless for two innings. Until in the forth, Carl Sandburg scored their only run of the game. Both teams went scoreless for their next at-bats until the Chaps ended it in a mercy rule walk off scoring four runs to end the game 9-1, putting their record at 17-22.
After the game, head coach Barry Froehle praised the team’s improvement in pitching and defense.
“We played defensively very well. Pitching Bell [Isabella Andrade] in the circle and then Angelina [Tuminello] came in the first game, they did great. And Alyssa [Valencik] pitched really well in the second game,” he said.
He also pointed at adjustments the team made following their recent loss in Milwaukee.
“We hit the ball a lot better today. We didn’t hit very well in Milwaukee, so we made some adjustments in our swings and it shows.”
Froehle added how he planned to change pitches if Carl Sandburg tied the first game but still had faith in Tuminello.
“I was going to bring Bell [Isabella Andrade] back in if they were going to tie it, but I had every bit of faith in Angelina [Tuminello] to get the final out,”he said.
DuPage will host sophomore day and a doubleheader against Illinois Valley Community College on April 28, to end the regular season. Game one starts at 3:00 p.m.
