For the first time in nearly 40 years, homecoming makes a return to College of DuPage. While many are looking forward to the big game against Georgia Military College, there will be many activities prior to the Sept. 27 football game. Here’s a guide to help you navigate your way through the festivities. And keep in mind, all events will have free food.

Festivities kick off Sept. 23 with Spirit Week, a showcase of student and staff COD pride. Here is a list of Spirit Week activities:

Tuesday: Pep Rally

  • What: Meet all of the fall sports teams, the spirit team (cheerleaders) and Chappy the Chaparral.
  • Where: SSC Atrium
  • When: Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Why: You can show your support for student athletes.
  • Reconsider: If pep rallies give you bad memories of high school.

Wednesday: Spirit of Chappy

  • What: Today, there isn’t an actual event, but there are some notable ongoing things during the day. For starters, there will be a photo booth in the Atrium. You can also have your say in a student contest. You can vote for the best creative submissions for the Spirit of Chappy contest. Each submitted piece showcases COD pride and will be on display. The winner will be announced during this day.
  • Where: SSC Atrium
  • When: Sept. 24, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Why: There’s a photo booth!
  • Reconsider: If you don’t care for student “artwork.”

Thursday: Chappy Olympics

  • What: Join in a variety of contests for a chance to win a premium parking pass and gift cards. The contests include a football-inspired obstacle course and relay races.
  • Where: Outside the SSC by the Chaparral statue
  • When: Sept. 25, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Why: You could possibly win a premium parking pass.
  • Reconsider: If you know you’re not going to win that premium parking pass (they’re only giving out one).

And a number of events will precede the day of the big game on Saturday, Sept. 27. Here is a list of Saturday events:

Alumni Brunch

  • What: COD rolls out the carpet with brunch with the college president and tour of campus. This event is for alumni only. For details, visit the alumni brunch website.
  • Where: On campus
  • When: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Golden Eagles Game

  • What: Watch a youth football game with Glen Ellyn’s very own Golden Eagles.
  • Where: Football Stadium
  • When: 10:00 a.m.
  • Why: Cheer young football players on.
  • Reconsider: If you hate kids (but c’mon, wouldn’t it be nice if we cheered them on?)

Pre-Game Party/Tailgating

  • What: Lots of things going on, so here’s our game plan.
    • Grab a free hot dog and some popcorn.
    • Run an obstacle course and do some bungee racing.
    • Play a classic game of bean bag toss and other lawn games.
    • If you have children, you can have them play with Bozo buckets, get their face painted and ask for a balloon dog.
    • Take a picture with Chappy the mascot.
    • Go up to the B96 booth for music and giveaways.
    • Tailgate at the parking lot.
  • Where: Parking lot 1 (next to the stadium)
  • When: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • Why: There’s plenty to do leading up to the game.
  • Reconsider: If you must have alcohol when you tailgate. Yes, booze can’t be brought to campus (however we’ve heard the Waterleaf has an extensive wine cellar you can try out).

Homecoming Game

  • What: The big game between Chaparrals versus the Bulldogs.
  • Where: Football Stadium
  • When: 1:00 p.m.
  • Why: Um, homecoming always has to have a football game, right?
  • Reconsider: If you don’t watch football, I guess.
