Board of trustees revise nine policies

College of DuPage trustees decided Thursday they need more authority to clear the dark clouds looming over the campus’ operations. They approved nine new policies that will transfer supremacy away from the administration and into trustees’ hands.

Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton pointed out the problems that the college has faced is a result of old board members giving the president too much power. “The administration has too much authority, and the board has less authority,” said Hamilton.

One policy change, for example, would require the college president to manage the school based on what the board policy states. This would give the board more power and the president less.

Along with this policy change, there were eight other changes. Some of these changes included: responsibilities of the board, authority of members of the board, and formulation of board policy.

Also, during the public comments of the meeting Thursday night, two student athletes and Bob Graham, a former soccer coach discussed the problems of the soccer facilities. Graham pointed out how the soccer fields have gotten worse over the years and doesn’t understand why it hasn’t been fixed.

Both student athletes spoke up at the meeting expressing how this is not the first time the soccer program has approached this problem. From the men’s soccer team Michael DeSimone, points out the fields do not meet college standards. DeSimone also mentions the fields are dangerous to play on because they can cause injury to the players.

Student trustee, Gloria Rorak said she, “hopes we seriously consider making improvements to their facilities.”
